When the possibility of travel opened space for summer plans, we returned to the Balearic islands, where the sun-kissed shores and lapping blue waves served as a prescription for a year in lockdown restricted to armchair travel.
Our first stop: Ibiza, an island of contrasts where sun-seekers bank on the Balearic shores in search for freedom and a sense of release. While Ibiza is a mecca for hedonists and those seeking sound and stimulation, we ventured inland, a quieter but equally energizing part of the island. Driving miles up a country road, we reach Casi Gasi, where tranquility as a philosophy is rooted deeply into the design.
The agriturismo hotel is located in the heart of Ibiza, on a four-acre expanse of rolling hills dotted with olive groves and verdant fields yielding citrus, almond, and fig. Rural well-being and regenerative tourism are central pillars to the hotel vision, where owners Margaret von Korff and her Ibicenco husband Luis Trigueros Juan infuse their passion for sustainable cuisine through the kitchen farm to table.
The menu at Cas Gasi demonstrates Spanish gastronomy at its best, expressing the strength of its regional flavors: salted anchovies bathed in olive oil, cold cuts of cured, Catalonian hams, tangy atolls of pan con tomato and charred crisps of pimiento del padron. The vegetable garden on-site harvests the in-house olive oil and seasonal salads on the menu, shifting with the season’s harvest.
The hotel encourages slow living and reconnecting to nature, with programming designed for mindfulness. Every morning, yoga classes take place by the pool deck, where sun salutations move against the shaft of morning light and to the tune of bird song. Massage services, available upon request, take place under a canopy of trees. Whether you’re seeking a holiday for spiritual connection or detox from debauchery on the island, Cas Gasi brings you back to the center.
After a year in lockdown and ease back to normal life, traveling in chaotic environments no longer holds the same appeal in post-pandemic times. The greatest takeaway at Cas Gasi is the feeling of groundedness: and how a change of environment in its raw and beautiful setting serves as a reminder of how intentional motion can be the ultimate act of self-care.
CAS GASI is located in Camino Viejo de Sant Mateu, s/n, 07814 Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera, Balearic Islands, Spain
