Introducing a series called Lifewear, where we spotlight our favorite brands that design with durability in mind. Enter Métier, a London-based luggage brand that infuses Italian craftsmanship through a thoroughly modern lens.
Unpacking a conversation with Melissa Morris, designer and founder of Métier, a London-based brand designing luggage to last a lifetime. Melissa shares her design philosophies, travel essentials, and her favorite bar in London to grab a post-work aperitivo.
What is your background?
I studied sculpture and business at university, which influences my approach to design. I have always loved art and creating things, but equally, I love math and strategy. My mom was a mathematician, which rubbed off on me. I enjoyed going from business classes to the art studio and switching from the right brain to the left.
After university, I worked in the fashion industry and tried to immerse myself in as many aspects as possible. I always wanted to understand how different departments worked and how each role on a team can support the greater mission. This has helped me lead my own company as I can help drive all aspects of Métier alongside my incredible team.
Everything I do merges creativity with logic. Whether it's how I approach design, digital marketing, or strategy, it's important to draw lines with the freedom to color outside of them.
What inspired you to start Métier?
I experienced a gap in the market and created Métier to fill that gap. As the world had become faster and faster, we were all on the go more than ever. The office is now from anywhere: in the back of a cab, on an airplane, in a coffee shop, or at home. Our bags, therefore, need to carry and move with us differently than ever before - they need to be mobile offices.
While technology had revolutionized the way we live, the inside of a bag had never changed to keep up. I could not find a market product that did not compromise style for function or vice versa. The more I looked, the more I realized how many others looked for the same thing. Méter unites impeccable Italian craftsmanship with a deep understanding of the way we live today.

What is Métier inspired by?
I look at a blend of inspirations that fuse form and function. Vintage cars from the 60s and 70s inspire me; our color palette comes from vintage Porsche 911 palettes. I also love vintage Riva boats, which are the ultimate in maximizing space and storage. I also look a lot at furniture design and architecture.
In school, I had a fascination with chairs as the leading design that fuses sculpture with function. Charlotte Perriand was a huge inspiration, which I named one of my key designs after.
What makes a bag a true "classic"?
First and foremost, the craftsmanship needs to not only last but get better with time. Our pieces are made to last a lifetime and are also made to age beautifully. We often show our used pieces in the store to show how they will get even better; it's a source of pride, probably similar to a beloved pair of Japanese raw denim.
From an aesthetic point of view, I believe a classic infuses style, not fashion. It does not feel of the moment, but something that feels timeless and could belong in any era and look entirely at home on any style icon.

Who is the Métier man or woman?
The Métier man and woman is someone who has plenty to say and nothing to prove. They are global citizens who chart their path and live life to the fullest. They are passionate about their work and life. They love to explore, learn, uncover the world's best-kept secret. They are profoundly discerning and know true quality. I may be biased, but I always say we have the world's best clients. I am often in our London shop where I have a bar in the back and love hanging out and catching up with our clients. They are exciting and lead inspiring lives; they are a massive inspiration for my work, and actually, a lot of my new designs come from their requests.

What is your packing philosophy?
I often pack lots of light layers in tones of black, white, and cream. I love mixing neutrals and don't wear a lot of color or pattern other than stripes. My basic outfits stay the same, and then a simple change of shoes, jacket, jewelry, or lipstick is how I usually change my look depending on where I am heading. This keeps packing light (carry-on only is a must!) and makes it easy while on the road.
What are your five packing essentials?
Cristaseya knits — I am an addict!
Yoga clothes — It's an essential part of my morning routine whether I am home or away.
My sketchbook — I love our GF Smith notebooks made from upcycled coffee cups.
Seed to Skin Body Oil — Small indulgences are so important when traveling, especially for work.
Airpods — Because I am always listening to music.
Who are the artists, architects, or designers that inspire Métier?

What are your favorite destinations around the world?
My favorite destinations are Corsica, Deia, Tokyo, Stockholm, Paris, Zurich, LA, Tuscany, Berlin, and Sylt.
My favorite hotels are La Colombe d’Or, Domaine de Murtoli, Ett Hem, Chateau Marmont, Bowery Hotel.
What is your favorite place in the world for an aperitif?
The Colony Bar at the Beaumont Hotel or The Coburg Bar at the Connaught Hotel in London. Both locations are close to my studio and shop, and it's how I like to unwind after a long workday.
For a soak in the sea?
The beaches of Mallorca.
For a quiet weekend away from the city?
Bruton in Somerset for the art, food, and countryside. I’m also fond of Cornwall, which is a bit further away but it feels like a different world.
