A Letter from The Editor
What will travel look like in a post-pandemic world?
This question has loomed over my head since the start of the pandemic, as countries raced to seal their borders against foreigners. Leading up to lockdown, travel has been accelerating in an unsustainable direction, often taking a toll on both the passenger and the destination. Travel not only became purely consumptive but extractive, causing local communities to bear the brunt of its effects.
A year grounded has given us a lot of time to think, and rethink, what the future of travel has in store. We reflect on the lessons of lockdown; and how our life — like our voyages — could be conducted through a better lens. Before bracing to a return to a “new normal”, we have an opportunity to reframe the way we think about our journeys: by choosing a more mindful and sustainable path.
Travel is fundamental to modern life, and a year of standing still has only made it more clear that there is no substitute for immersing in new and foreign landscapes. In this new edition of Bon Weekender, I look forward to exploring and sharing the ways in which we can move through the world in a more thoughtful direction. I hope we’ll take the wisdom of this learning year into the open skies.
Bon Weekender is a destination that explores travel through the lens of sustainability, art, and design. Our stories focus on the links between movement and creativity, post-tourism, and the future of travel.
